I have worked in a collaborative manner, of sorts, with others before on projects. Usually in the form of something like a show or the related items for a show, postcards, catalogs, etc. I am a person that likes my solitude in the studio, just me, a cup of coffee, my ipod and the project I am working on. So, this idea of now launching this project that will either succeed or fail based on the participation of others and be outside my control, beyond promoting the project.... well, it is pretty damn scary.
I would like to think that the act of asking people to submit their own rejected stories will make people sit back and think a little, evaluate how they go about deciding what is worth pursuing in their own lives. And why there are certain things we choose not to pursue... and why?
I know some of the project details are a wee bit vague at the moment, but I do have a clear idea of where I would like this to go and how I would like to present the final work, it is, however, difficult to go there without knowing what the response will be. I am allowing at least one year to collect stories to incorporate into the installation. I am hoping to be overwhelmed with submissions, nothing would make me happier to get the project to what I envision it to be.
I hope with this project people will not only want to participate, but will also be willing to share the project with others they know in the hopes that they will participate and submit their own rejected stories. I am choosing to keep the submission process anonymous, thinking that will make people, especially people I personally know, more willing to participate. It is not important for me to know where the stories come from, but it is important for the submitter to evaluate where the stories came from in their own lives.
Ok, enough for today. Thanks for taking a read, and I hope you will participate.
